On October 5, 2008 our students in grades 3-8 participated in a Hunger Awareness Meal. They entered the cafeteria and were given a number 1-3 to indicate to which of the three groups they would belong: poor, middle class/working class, or wealty/rich. The number of students in each group represented the % of people that belong in those groups worldwide. Students were then led to a table or place in the cafeteria that matched their number.
Rich Table: these students had a great meal-dessert
Middle Class: at this table students had a sandwhich and milk
Poor: these students sat on the floor with a bowl of rice and water
After the experience we had discussions about what this felt like, and came up with some examples of action we can take, etc.
This is just an example that in the past has been a most powerful experience with our students. It also is a great lesson to know how very lucky they are.
