1st-2nd Grade Class at St. Francis-St. James United School

Welcome to first and second grade! First and second grade is a combined classroom where together we work on the building blocks of learning. The combined 1-2 is a wonderful way for the children to work together as they grow and learn.

In first grade the children focus on learning the basics of reading and writing. Our reading program is very comprehensive and gives the students a wonderful start into reading and writing. The math program will introduce the first graders to basic number sense skills such as addition and subtraction, place value and telling time. The skills they learn as first graders will give them a strong foundation for the years to come.

With the help of Mrs. Mary Tschida the children are instructed in reading language arts and math separately. The second graders reading and language arts curriculum has wonderful literature and writing opportunities to build on what they have learned in first grade. It has been wonderful to watch them progress from beginning to fluent readers over the course of two years. The math curriculum in grade two builds on he skills they learned the previous year. We use a variety of hands on math tools and activities to teach the children.

One of the highlights of second grade is preparing for and receiving their first sacraments. We work closely with the parishes to provide a strong faith based religious education program. Experiencing their first sacraments together as a class has made their friendships even stronger.

Our afternoon is spent as a whole group. We have religion class daily and an all school Mass or payer service once a week. Science and Social Studies is also taught to both groups. The older children have taken it upon themselves to be role models for the first graders. The combined class has shown what team work can accomplish!
